The effects come primarily from the tryptamine alkaloid //N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT)// and //yuremamine//, and is sometimes used as the DMT containing admixture plant in [[ayahuasca|Ayahuasca]] preparations, although a traditional preparation called //vinho da jurema// is made from the root bark. Vaporized DMT lasts only a few minutes. Oral preparations can last up to 3 hours.
